Limits and accuracy
kami works inside your browser, on your device's memory. These limits keep it reliable, and the notes on accuracy say where a result needs your eye.
File size and number of files
- One run takes up to 500 MB in total and up to 200 files; a single file can be up to 500 MB. Files beyond that are not added, and the page says so.
- On phones and tablets, about 200 MB in total is a sensible ceiling. Beyond it the device may run out of memory and the run stops with a message; your files are not changed, so try fewer or smaller ones.
- Damaged PDFs are repaired when possible, but some cannot be read. Password-protected PDFs need their password first.
Pages per run
- Text recognition (OCR): up to 200 pages per run; for the rest, choose the following pages and run again.
- PDF to images: up to 200 pages per run; for the rest, choose the following pages and run again.
- Compare two PDFs: the first 100 pages of the two files are compared.
- Screens that show the pages draw up to 300 pages when choosing pages, 100 for redaction and 50 for fill and sign. Pages beyond that can still be chosen by typing their numbers, and the search for words to redact covers every page.
Typed values
- Page numbers go up to 100000; a reversed range such as 5-2 is refused.
- A password that protects a PDF has at most 32 characters: letters, digits and symbols from a standard keyboard, so that every PDF app can open the file.
Tools that guess are not 100% accurate
These tools read text or pictures and decide for you. They work well on most documents, but they can be wrong. Always open and check the result before you rely on it.
- Text recognition (OCR): Recognition is not 100% accurate: handwriting, faint or skewed scans and very small text cause mistakes. Check the text before you rely on search or copy.
- Rename invoices: Date, company and amount are guessed from the document's text and can be wrong. Check and correct the table before downloading; highlighted cells need a closer look.
- Black out (redact): The word search only finds text the PDF stores as text. Words inside scanned images, logos or handwriting are not found, so draw boxes over them. Open the result and check that nothing was missed.
- Remove blank pages: Blank pages are judged by how they look. A page with only faint text may be removed, and a blank page with specks may stay. Check the page numbers listed after the run.
- Crop PDF: Trimming white margins automatically decides where the content ends; faint lines, page numbers or specks can make it cut less, or more, than you expect. Check the result.
- Compare two PDFs: Differences can be missed, or marked where there are none. Comparing by text uses the text stored in the PDF, so choose appearance for scans. If a page was added or removed, the pages after it are compared out of step.
- Fill and sign: Form fields are found automatically, but some PDFs build their forms in ways that cannot be filled here (XFA forms, fields drawn as plain lines). Open the downloaded file and check what you entered.
- Remove author info: Removes the title, author, software and dates stored in the file, and the author names on comments. It does not remove names written on the pages, information inside images, or what was typed into form fields.
- Protect with password: A password stops people who do not know it from opening the file. Anyone who knows it can copy, print or pass the content on, so share it carefully and choose a long password.
- Compress PDF: How much smaller a file gets depends on what is inside, and some files hardly shrink. Strong lowers photo quality, so keep Standard for printing.
Pro and free tries
- Each Pro tool can be tried once for free in this browser.
- A licence key works in up to 3 browsers. To move it, remove it on the Pro page of the browser you no longer use (while online), then enter it in the new one.
- When online, the key is checked about once a day, and a refunded or disabled key stops working then. Pro keeps working offline, and a 7-day pass still ends on time.
kami does not guarantee that a result is correct or complete. For contracts, filings and documents with personal data, open the finished file and check it before you send or submit it.
